The Book of Mormon has broken ticketing records with its first Sydney onsale.

After announcing its Sydney season at the beginning of September, the hit-Broadway musical written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez went on sale to the public on Tuesday 5 September.

The award-winning production sold more than 45,000 tickets during the initial onsale period, making it the highest grossing onsale of any musical theatre production in Sydney’s history.

Due to overwhelming demand, the booking period was quickly extended to 22 April 2018.

The Book of Mormon opens at Lyric Theatre, Sydney on 28 February 2018, transferring from Melbourne’s Princess Theatre where it made its Australian debut on 17 January 2017.

The Aussie cast have since notched up over 250 sold-out performances, with the show simultaneously holding the record for the highest sales of any production in the Princess Theatre’s 159-year history.

Meanwhile at the 2017 Helpmann Awards, The Book of Mormon was crowned winner of the coveted Best Musical award, while Trey Parker and Casey Nicholaw were awarded Best Direction of a Musical.

The hilarious musical bids farewell to Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in January, before saying a much-anticipated 'Hello' to Sydney the following month.

The Book of Mormon made its world premiere in March 2011 at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theater, going on to play 335 consecutive weeks at more than 100% capacity on Broadway (standing room adding additional capacity), 170 weeks at more than 100% capacity at theatres around the US, and has since sold out every single one of its 1,888 performances thus far in London’s West End.
